Field Position:

This position is located in the Mid-Atlantic Region (PA, VA, NC, TN, AR, etc.) and is considered field-based, with a blend of onsite and remote work activities. Field associates will spend their time both traveling to and spending time in various PetSmart locations and can expect to be asked to travel to Phoenix Home Office periodically throughout the year. Field associates typically work out of their home office when not traveling as outlined above.

About the Job:

SUMMARY

The Lead Field Human Resources Business Partner supports the Mountain West region which is comprised of 13 districts and 210+ stores. The geography of store locations spans across Pennsylvania down to South Carolina and over to Arkansas. The HRBP provides leadership, support, and guidance, to the Regional Vice President and the District Leaders as it relates to developing and engaging strong teams.

 

This position is based in the Mid-Atlantic Region (PA, VA, NC, TN, AR, etc.) and is considered a Field based role.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Supports RVP (1) and DLs (13) by providing strategic HR support as their trusted thought partner and credible coach; focused on driving a people-first culture.
  • Supports leadership to build strong talent benches, create and maintain highly engaged teams, and create a culture of recognition.
    • Builds/sustains Strong Talent Benches - continually build/sustain strong leadership benches, including a DEI focus. Lead organized and productive regular talent discussions.
    • Engages Teams – leverage engagement data to identify themes/trends; address accordingly. Effectively diagnose both team and leadership development needs – recommend and/or deliver effective solutions.
    • Creates Culture of Recognition – Leverage recognition data to identify themes/trends; address accordingly.
  • Strengthens PetSmart’s pro-associate culture. Promote strong leader/associate relationships.
  • Helps build a better future by helping client see around corners and deliver the future vision.
  • Influences and support culture of Belonging, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Acts as change champion throughout the region related to all people-related initiatives, resources, etc.
  • Leads all functions of HR for assigned Regions(s), including talent and performance management, succession planning, associate engagement, positive work environment, organizational development, change management, associate relations, and effective adoption of company initiatives and strategies.
  • Partners with the Associate Relations and Legal teams to conduct and/or review ethics and integrity and high-conflict brand risk investigations. Supports Associate Relations initiatives to promote a respectful work environment, associate engagement and retention.
  • Promotes and strengthens a culture of positive associate relations by actively listening and appropriately responding to associate/leadership concerns with a sense of urgency.
  • Supports talent acquisition efforts by building an internal talent pipeline and supporting talent development programs. Partners with District Leaders in workforce planning and takes an active role in the interview process for District and Store Leader positions and other key leadership positions as needed.
  • Supports talent management and Everyday Performance Management initiatives, including coaching good and poor performance. In partnership with Associate Relations and Legal teams, advises leaders on the coaching to correct process, including disciplinary action and termination.
  • Supports and guides the regional leadership team through the succession planning and talent calibration processes.
  • Guides leaders to implement individual development plans for associates.
  • Diagnoses and identifies leadership and team development needs and implements practical and effective solutions.
  • Facilitates training sessions (virtual and in-person) on topics such as diversity and inclusion, positive associate relations, leadership development, and team building.
  • Uses relevant business data to assess organizational health, support the HR strategy and measure progress and regularly reviews HR dashboards, analyzes and identifies trends, and recommends creative solutions to close gaps and strengthen our culture.
  • Demonstrates keen understanding of the business strategy to develop and execute innovative people solutions using experience, data analyses, and relevant organizational resources.
  • Owns and leads assigned projects in partnership with relevant stakeholders assessing project impact to all areas of HR, store strategy and operations, and the store environment.
  • Serves as change agent to positively impact organizational effectiveness and provides guidance and coaching to leadership team and stakeholders on effective communication and follow up change management activities.
  • This position requires a high level of cross-functional collaboration throughout the Human Resources, home office, senior colleagues, store operations and Field organizations to maintain alignment and share actionable information, best practices, critical needs and initiatives with all parties on a regular basis.
  • Regular travel is required (up to 50%).

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related field from a four-year college or university preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in an HR Generalist capacity for a multi-unit retail function.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications.

TECHNICAL SKILLS 

  • Demonstrated experience in executive business partnership and autonomous decision-making.
  • Demonstrated success in creating an environment of trust with clients where integrity is unquestioned and effectively utilizing negotiation and conflict resolution skills when needed.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, influencing, facilitation and communication skills with the ability to work across functional lines and at many levels. Excellent change management skills and ability to influence change adoption by leaders and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in talent management, leadership development, performance management, and organizational development.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple, conflicting priorities with a proactive approach and enterprise focus and outstanding organizational skills, including attention to detail.
  • Proven business and financial acumen, analytical and strategic thinking and delivery with proven, measurable results.
  • Ability to analyze HR metrics to develop creative solutions to leader effectiveness and associate engagement risks and drive key business strategies and objectives.
  • Effective learning agility to maintain knowledge of industry and people trends and employment legislation and integrate to innovative business and people solutions.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft software: Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

SPHR/PHR certificate preferred.
