Reporting to the Radio Section Captain within Toronto Fire Service's Technology Division, the Electronics Technician will be responsible for the installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of radio and related electronic communication systems and equipment, as well as providing technical support to field personnel. The role requires strong knowledge of electronics, telecommunications, and RF theory.
The primary functions associated with the role include, but are not limited to, the following core services:
Major Responsibilities:
- Program, configure, diagnose, repair, and troubleshoot faults using test instruments for the following:
- Land mobile radio (LMR) electronic equipment, including P25 trunked digital and analog conventional operation two-way radios, mobile radios, antenna subsystems, dispatch consoles, and system infrastructure.
- Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems with a strong understanding of electronic theory, circuitry, schematics, and diagnostic equipment, to maintain the operation of fire station alerting systems.
- Audio-video equipment, including public address (PA), speakers, and audio mixers utilized in fire station alerting systems.
- Inspect, test, calibrate and specification verification of equipment to ensure optimal performance using specialized tools such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multi-meters.
- Service and perform preventative maintenance on all telecommunications and electronic equipment and peripherals as scheduled.
- Assess the performance and suitability of current or future telecommunications technology to provide advice on procurement decisions.
- Perform field service on supported electronic equipment where it is impractical for the equipment to be brought to the shop for service. Field service inherent to the job may include limited design or fabrication of custom assemblies.
In addition to the above duties, the successful candidates are required to:
- Continually maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity, reliability, and credibility, which are fundamental requirements for this position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to the following:
Must possess:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in the field of Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science or an approved equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Considerable experience in troubleshooting and repairing technical faults in the system and equipment using specialized instruments and computers.
- Considerable experience installing and maintaining various radio equipment and systems, including P25 trunked and conventional operation.
- Possess a Driver's License, Class 'G' or better, valid in the Province of Ontario and be able to maintain the same.
Must also possess:
- Familiarity with radio frequency (RF) engineering, factors that affect RF propagation, and techniques for enhancing coverage (antenna design and placement, Bi-directional Amplifiers (BDAs), etc.)
- Able to work a 24-hour On-Call shift on a rotation basis, including weekends and statutory holidays.
- Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience using MS Office (Word, Excel etc.).
- Experience in leading and documenting technical projects and communicating with management and external stakeholders.
- Commitment to customer service, performance quality and continuous improvement.
- Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Working with critical infrastructure and public safety systems both independently with minimum supervision, as well as in a diverse team setting.
