ABAC CHIEF OF POLICE JOB SUMMARY The Chief of Police leads the colleges police department, ensuring campus safety through strategic leadership, policy development, and compliance with laws. This role involves managing the departments budget, overseeing personnel, and coordinating emergency response efforts. As the subject-matter expert on campus security, the Chief collaborates with external agencies and directs department operations to maintain a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.This position has been identified by Federal Law (Jeanne Clery Act) as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), with significant student and campus responsibilities. CSAs are obligated to report crimes reported to them which occurred on campus, in public areas bordering campus, and in certain non-campus buildings owned or controlled (leased) by the College. MAJOR DUTIES - Provide Strategic Leadership and Oversight: Lead the colleges police department with a clear vision for campus safety. Set departmental goals, establish priorities, and ensure alignment with institutional objectives. Supervise command staff and officers, fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and service. - Direct Daily Operations and Personnel Management: Oversee the deployment and scheduling of officers and dispatchers to ensure optimal coverage and responsiveness. Monitor performance, conduct evaluations, and implement training programs to maintain high standards of law enforcement and public safety. - Administer Departmental Functions and Initiatives: Exercise full authority over all aspects of the departments operations, including patrol, investigations, and community engagement. Develop and implement initiatives that enhance campus safety and promote a secure learning environment. - Serve as Campus Safety Expert and Emergency Response Leader: Act as the colleges primary authority on law enforcement and emergency preparedness. Lead responses to critical incidents, including natural disasters, active threats, and other emergencies. Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external agencies to ensure effective incident management. - Represent the Department and College: Serve as the official representative of the police department at college functions, community events, and professional meetings. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS Reports to the Vice President for Finance and Operations. Oversees all police department personnel. GUIDELINES Work is guided by college policies, Georgia law, federal regulations including Clery and Title IX, and law enforcement best practices. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK The role involves complex administrative, supervisory, and law enforcement duties. It requires strategic planning, emergency response coordination, and regulatory compliance.
